District Writing Assessment

Bad Leaders

Author's Note: This is a response to the short story, The Hundredth Dove.  It is also my spring District Writing Assessment.  It is about how the king in the story is really a bad leader.

A group of school kids huddled around each other in a quiet, vacant alleyway on a dark, Saturday night.  One of the kids, the leader of the group, started distributing a pack of cigarettes to the rest of the group.  The youngest of the group, a 15 year old, hesitated before grabbing one of the cigarettes.  The leader of the group encouraged the 15 year old and soon won the war against the young man’s judgment.  This teenager started to this normally until he started to see the negative affects the cigarettes did to him.  He instantly ditched smoking and learned that some leaders are bad leaders.

In the story, The Hundredth Dove, Hugh, the fowler, learned that some leaders are bad leaders, just like the leader of the school group of kids.  In the story, the king had been ordering Hugh to hunt game birds for the high king's table.  When a gigantic order for game birds was put in for the king's wedding, the queen objected, but the king wouldn't listen.  This is when the queen turned into the slim, white dove.  In her dove form, she would purposefully get caught just so that she could escape from Hugh's prized silken net.  Lady Columbia, the queen, purposely did this because she was trying to warn the fowler.

Doves are the symbol of peace, purity, love, tenderness, and hope.  Lady Columbia was Hugh's last hope.  The fowler never saw the queen’s warnings though and continued to hunt the birds.  When all of the other doves were caught, the queen sacrificed herself in an attempt to try and save the fowler.  Her bribery wasn’t enough to save herself or the rest of the doves.  After Hugh killed the queen, he suddenly understood what the queen was trying to warn him about.  The king was giving the fowler bad orders, and the queen was trying to warn him about it.  As soon as the fowler understood the queen’s warnings, he gave up hunting for the rest of his life.

After hearing all of the queen’s warnings, Hugh finally learns that the king was a bad leader.  This is also a lesson for us.  Even in reality there are bad leaders.  Some people may try pushing you into doing things that you know isn’t right.  These are people you should avoid.  An adult may not be around to stop it, so the best way to help the situation is to just be a good leader and walk away.  Stay away from bad leaders, and become a good leader yourself.
